How should I connect an external mic to record on iOS?

Use an external mic for better sound quality when recording with your iOS device.

To record audio in the Riverside iOS app with an external 3.5 mm microphone, it must be connected to the iOS device using a TRRS splitter or TRRS adapter and with the app's Speak Mode/Listen Mode enabled. Otherwise, the iOS device will record from its own built-in mic, not the external mic.

Follow the steps below with the corresponding image. Links are to example connectors.

  1. Open the Riverside iOS app and connect a Lightning to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack adapter to your iOS device.
  2. Connect a TRRS splitter (or a TRRS adapter) to the Lightning to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack adapter.
  3. Connect the external 3.5 mm microphone to the mic input of the TRRS splitter (or the TRRS adapter).
  4. In the Wired Connection pop-up in the Riverside iOS app, tap Yes to enable Speak Mode/Listen Mode.

NOTE: About Speak Mode/Listen Mode
When an external mic is connected, the iOS device cannot record audio and play audio at the same time. After you enable Speak Mode/Listen Mode in the Studio, when Speak Mode is on, you can record audio with the external mic. When Listen Mode is on, the device's speakers will play the Studio's audio.
