You can record high-quality video using an external digital camera connected to your computer.
Connect Camera with USB
Many digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) and mirrorless cameras can be used to capture video by connecting the camera to your computer with a USB cable.
To use a USB-to-computer setup:
- Install the camera software.
- Connect the device to your computer with a USB.
- Select the device as the camera input in the Riverside Studio or Lobby.
You may need to restart your browser if you don't see the camera available.
When connecting via USB, the resolution of your recording is based on the camera's capabilities and the camera capture software's maximum video resolution. For example:
- Canon EOS Webcam Utility: 1024 × 576
- Sony Imaging Edge Webcam: 1024 × 576
- Nikon Webcam Utility: 1024 × 768
- Panasonic LUMIX Webcam Software (Beta): 1280 × 960 or 1280 × 720
- GoPro Webcam desktop utility: 1920 × 1080
NOTE:
When capturing video with a USB-to-computer setup, you must use a different device for the audio source like a headset or external mic.
Connect Camera with External Capture Card For Higher Resolution Recordings
We recommend using a dedicated external capture card with your DSLR or mirrorless camera to record video at higher resolutions than are possible only using a USB cable. The capture card plugs into a USB port on your computer and receives HDMI video from the camera.
TIP:
With a video capture card, you can also send audio over from the camera to your computer. However, the microphones built into cameras usually have worse sound quality than external mics. You can plug an external mic into the camera and select the capture card as your audio source.
