How does RTMP streaming work?

Real-Time Messaging Protocol (RTMP) is a set of rules for sending audio, video, and other data over the internet as it happens.

RTMP works by breaking up the video and audio data into smaller chunks. These chunks are sent from the source, like a computer or a camera, to an RTMP server which then sends it out to the viewers.

Riverside users need to manually copy and paste a Stream URL and a Stream Key into Riverside to connect the platform with Riverside for RTMP live streaming.

  • Stream URL - An address to a specific location on the internet where your live video is sent so that it can be broadcast to viewers.
  • Stream Key - A password that ensures that only you can broadcast to your channel or page, keeping your stream secure. When you set up your streaming software, you enter the stream key to prove that you are allowed to send your video to that platform.
