Add a virtual background to your video

« To Studio visual effects and virtual backgrounds: Overview

Virtual backgrounds hide your current background with a digital backdrop, making your space look more professional and enhancing the brand and feel of your recording.

Please note:
This feature is in beta and is being released gradually to Riverside users.

  • From the lobby

    1. From your computer browser, MacOS desktop app or iOS app, join a Riverside studio.
    2. On the lobby page, in your video preview, click visual-effects-wand-icon.svg Effects.
    3. On the panel under Backgrounds, choose a background.
    4. Click the X to close Visual effects panel.
    5. Click Join studio and enter the recording session.

    For best results, use even lighting and a clear wall behind you

  • From the studio

    On a computer browser or MacOS desktop app

    1. Join a Riverside studio.
    2. Ask the host to stop the recording.
    3. Inside the studio, at the top of the page, click settings.svg Settings.
    4. Under the Audio and Video section, in your video preview, click visual-effects-wand-icon.svg Effects.
    5. Change the effects.
    6. Click the X to close Visual effects panel.
    7. Click the X to close Settings panel and return to the studio.

    On your iOS app

    1. Join a Riverside studio.
    2. Tap on your own video preview.
    3. In the top right of your screen, tap visual-effects-wand-icon.svg Effects.
    4. Change the effects.
    5. Click the X to close Visual effects panel.

    For best results, use even lighting and a clear wall behind you.

Icon.svg Good to know

  • Visual effects are not yet supported for Studios set in 4K. Be sure your studio is set to 720p or 1080p to access visual effects.
  • System requirements: Devices must have 8 or more physical processing cores.
  • Virtual backgrounds and blurs are included in the final recording file. 
  • A logged-in guest on a Pro plan has access to Visual Effects upon joining someone else's freemium studio.

  • When a virtual background is removed, the recording stops and a new one starts.

  • Virtual backgrounds do not work with the mobile as webcam feature.

  • The background is present in both local and cloud recordings.
