Technical Specifications

Why do I need to turn off my VPN, browser extensions, or firewall when I record?
Certain security setups and content-blocking utilities can limit whether your computer can connect to the Riverside Studio, add audio/video flaws to your recording file, and prevent your local track from uploading when the call ends.

Can I record on Riverside using a remote desktop application or NDI?
No. Riverside does not support recording with a remote desktop application. Additionally, we do not recommend using NDI (Network Device Interface) to mount a webcam.

Do my guests need to have the Mac desktop app in order to record?
No. You and your guests can all join your Riverside studio from different platforms, including from a computer browser, mobile app, or the MacOS desktop app.

How can I check my Internet bandwidth and set-up?
To check your internet bandwidth and set-up, run a pre-call diagnostic test in your computer or mobile device's browser.

Audio

Can I listen to my own audio to test how I sound?
You can check how your microphone and other aspects of your setup are working by creating a short test recording with the Host and playing it back in the Studio.

How can I minimize echo in the Studio and on my recorded tracks? My Guests are already wearing headphones.
To minimize echo in a recorded track, plug the headphones directly into the computer/device, enable that participant's echo cancellation, select your device's built-in microphone, and enable Mix-Minus.

Why am I hearing an echo? My headphones are connected a to mic or interface.
We recommend that you connect headphones directly to the computer you are recording with instead of connecting them to an external device.

Can I play music in the Studio during a live recording session?
Yes, the Host can play music or other files during a live recording session in the Studio using the Media Board

Does Riverside record participant audio in stereo or mono?
Riverside records each participant's audio in mono, as a single sound channel.

What is the difference between Remove Background Noise and Noise Reduction?
Remove Background Noise is filter that can be toggled on/off in the Studio before recording. Noise Reduction is a filter that can be toggled on/off in the Editor after recording.

Will a file I add to the Media Board show across all of my Productions, or only in the Studio it was uploaded to?
A file added to the Media Board library only shows in the Studio in which it was uploaded.

Will stock/default Media Board files reappear even after they are deleted?
Yes, deleted default sounds on the Media Board replenish after the Host leaves and rejoins the Studio.

Video

What is the maximum video quality during a live call?
In the Studio, participants see each other's live video feeds up to a 720p resolution.

Can I customize my video bit rate?
Yes, Business accounts can contact Riverside Support to increase their Studios' target video bit rate.

Can I use a virtual camera when I record?
Yes, you can select a virtual camera, such as OBS, as your camera input on Riverside.

Can guests use custom backgrounds that have been added to the account?
Yes. Once a custom background is uploaded, it is available in all of the Studios across the Production for all participants who join from the Riverside website.

Roles and Participants

What is a Studio Access Link?
To join a Studio and record on Riverside, click or tap the Studio Access Link sent by the Host or Producer.

Can I Host a Studio but not be recorded?
If you do not want to be recorded, join the Studio as Producer.

Can I hide the Producer's video frame in the Studio?
Yes, the Producer can turn off their microphone and camera. They can continue to monitor the session and write in the chat.

What is different about the Producer role on a Riverside for Business account?
Like the Host, a Producer can also help a participant change their Mic, Camera, or Speaker as well as take other Studio management actions. However, a Producer does not create a separate High Quality Track during the recording.

How do I know if people are recording in a Studio?
You will see a · REC label in the Studio's lobby and next to the studio's name on the Studios page if someone is already recording in it.

Can audience members see each other?
No. Audience members only see someone’s name if they write in the Studio chat or if someone joins the live call.

In the Studio

Is there a time limit on how long a recording session can go?
There's no limit imposed by Riverside on a recording session's length.

What happens if I get disconnected from the Studio during a recording?
If you get disconnected from the Studio during a recording, the other people in the Studio are not impacted and the recording continues.

Can I record in multiple Studios at once?
Business account team members can record simultaneously in multiple Studios at once, based on the number of member seats filled in their account.

Should I turn off my screensaver before I record?
In general, when your webcam is active, your computer's screensaver will not turn on. We only suggest disabling your screensaver if you are recording audio-only and do not use a camera.

Can I use an Elgato Stream Deck to send action commands to Riverside?
At this time, you can use some of Riverside's Studio keyboard shortcuts with an Elgato Stream Deck.

Can I pause a recording in progress?
No, you cannot pause a recording that is in progress. You can always stop your recording and start again, but this will create a new track.

Can I edit snapshot images once I've left the studio?
No, at this time you can't edit snapshot pictures.

Screen Sharing and Media

How does a screen share look to participants in the Studio?
When you share your computer's screen in the Riverside Studio, a new video frame is added to the Studio displaying what you selected to share. The frame automatically expands to be the largest one so other participants can see its content more easily.

Can my screen share include sound?
Yes, you can include sound in a screen share, depending on what you choose to share.

Can I view someone's video while sharing my screen or when I'm on another window?

Yes, you can use the Picture-in-picture function to float video from Riverside's Studio above other windows.

Can I do a test recording of a screen share, presentation, or with the teleprompter?
Yes, you can create a short recording to check this. The Test Recording feature in the Studio lets you preview the participants' cameras and mics, but not shared content.

Can I redact, censor, or 'bleep out' parts of the recording?
No, but you can mute or remove a participant from the Studio if needed. You can also remove part of the recording in the Editor.

Can I delete default sounds on the Media Board?
No, not at this time. However, you can always upload new files to the Media Board.

Speaker Notes

How can I access my speaker notes while sharing a presentation?
You can have another participant control the slides in Riverside while you present. The Host can also use the Script feature to copy-and-paste the notes into the Studio and have them available to scroll through. Additionally, you can export the notes as a separate file or print them as a reference.

What can I add to the studio script?
The Host can bolditalicize, and underline text in the Studio's script box.

Why is my guest's teleprompter speed different from mine? What effects teleprompter speed?

There are a number of factors that may effect the  speed of the teleprompter. Hosts, producers, and guests can adjust their individual teleprompter controls accordingly, to sync speeds across devices.

Uploading and Storage

How does Riverside work differently than other recording platforms?
Riverside records from each person's camera and microphone with more clarity than other platforms that only record what is broadcasted online.

Has my recording finished uploading?
When your recording finishes uploading, you will see confirmation at the top of the Studio page that says check_mono.svg Upload Complete on a computer or arrow-up-circle.svg100% on a mobile device.

How do I check how much browser storage I have?
Follow these steps to check your computer browser's temporary storage capacity.

My Guest's local recording track didn't finish uploading – how do they send it?
You can only access your Guest's High Quality Track after it uploads from their device to Riverside.

Are the recording files kept on my computer?
Your recording data is kept on your computer browser's temporary storage.

Can I leave the session before the recording is over and still have a locally recorded track?
Yes, you can click Leave before the Host ends the recording, but keep the Riverside tab open.

Can I start a new recording while tracks are still uploading?
Yes, you can leave the Studio while your Guest's file is still uploading and even start recording in a different Studio.
